What are the applications of RFID technology in the Internet of Things?

Issuing time:2022-10-19 13:12

If we want to talk about the short-range Internet of Things network technology, we are probably most familiar with Bluetooth. However, in fact, in addition to Bluetooth, RFID technology has already been used in our daily life, even every day, such as our second-generation ID card, which is hard to leave.

RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) is a wireless communication technology, which can automatically identify target objects and obtain relevant data through RF signals. It is one of the commonly used short-range wireless communication technologies in the Internet of Things.

RFID tags have a complete set of modulators, encoders, memories, controllers and antennas. According to application requirements, built-in batteries can be selected for use. Compared with ordinary barcode, RFID technology has the advantages of waterproof, antimagnetic, high temperature resistance, long service life, large reading distance, encrypted label data, and larger storage capacity that ordinary barcode does not have. The electronic tag can read, write and store information through the antenna and reader.

Let's take a look at the current applications of RFID technology in the Internet of Things:

Warehousing logistics tracking

For domestic enterprises, Haier Group has established a fully automated logistics center to optimize supply chain management. By embedding RFID RFID tags on the box and tray, when goods enter or exit the warehouse or are stored, a microwave query signal is sent to RFID electronic tags through the antenna through a fixed or hand-held RFID reader writer. The electronic tags respond to the query signal and return the tag data information after receiving the query signal. After the data reading is completed, the data will be synchronized to the warehouse management platform in real time to improve the overall efficiency.

Taking Wal Mart as an example, foreign countries have implemented RFID plans for pallets and boxes, and the results are remarkable. After its exclusive stores implemented RFID technology, the replenishment speed of goods with electronic labels was three times that of goods with barcode technology, and the collaborative automated ordering system effectively reduced the inventory.

Medical item tracking

Taking the traceability management of medical waste as an example, Wanda Information proposed a supervision and management solution for medical waste, and designed a "supervision and traceability system for medical waste disposal" in combination with the medical waste disposal process. After weighing the medical waste recycling box in the hospital, write the information into the RFID electronic tag of the recycling box, upload it to the cloud, and synchronize the data with the environmental protection bureau and the incineration center. After the medical waste recycling box is delivered to the incineration center, it shall be weighed again for confirmation.

The whole process, using RFID technology, can effectively prevent the loss, leakage and accidents of medical waste, and has been promoted in many medical and health institutions in Shanghai, with good results.

Air baggage check

China Eastern Airlines has achieved large-scale baggage tracking through RFID technology. When passengers check baggage, airport staff will write flight number, departure port, arrival port, takeoff and landing time, baggage tag number and other information into RFID tags embedded in baggage tags. When baggage tags with RFID tags go through various nodes such as sorting, loading, arrival and retrieval, these baggage data information will be automatically collected to the background database. For passengers, it is convenient to query their baggage information through the WeChat applet on their mobile phones.

High speed vehicle charging

At present, ETC (Electronic Toll Collection) electronic toll collection system has been fully developed in China to ensure smooth operation of the entire road network. Through the on-board RFID tag installed on the vehicle windshield and the RFID reader writer on the ETC lane of the toll station, the ETC lane short-range communication is realized. With RFID technology, the railings will be released automatically when the vehicle passes through the expressway or bridge toll station. ETC vehicles do not need to stop to pay fees, and the fees will be settled directly through the bank background.

Intelligent parking recognition

RFID technology can be used for fixed point parking applications such as office buildings or residential areas. Through RFID technology, the RFID parking card carried on the vehicle works together with the RFID identifier, which can directly release the vehicle, effectively improving the problem of low traffic efficiency caused by traditional parking lot card swiping.

Card and commodity label

The second generation ID cards in China use built-in RFID technology, which is compounded into a single page card certificate through multi-layer polyester materials. The second-generation ID card contains an RFID chip, which is fast in reading and writing. The chip uses a specific logic encryption algorithm, which can achieve high-performance anti-counterfeiting and is not easy to forge. It is convenient for each certificate using department to use a computer for verification.

In the same way, RFID tags can also be used for commodity labels to facilitate commodity anti-counterfeiting. For example, liquor products, liquor traceability system based on RFID technology can realize integrated monitoring and recording information from raw materials, assembly, warehousing and inventory, shipment, to retailers, so as to eliminate fake liquor and effectively protect the interests of consumers and liquor enterprises.

In addition to the above mentioned application scenarios, RFID technology can also be used in military armament tracking, port cargo tracking and other scenarios. The era of the Internet of Everything has brought new challenges and opportunities to all industries. RFID wireless radio frequency identification technology enables every item to have its own "ID card ID", which can be widely promoted and used in item identification and tracking scenarios. With the development of technology, the price of RFID label products will become cheaper and cheaper. It is believed that RFID technology will be applied in more industry scenarios in the near future.
